Exhausted, have twins, lonely, disability, bereaved or struggling to cope with being a new parent?
What is Home Start and how can it help you?
Home Start provides a volunteer parent to families who are struggling to cope. The volunteer will make weekly visit to the families’ home giving friendly practical & emotional support to parents at this time of need.
How can I get support from Home Start?
With your consent, referrals come to us through other professionals such as your Health Visitor, Midwife, Children’s Centre support worker, Community Psychiatric Nurse, Social Worker, Doctor etc. or you can simply refer your self.
What happens next?
Once we have received the completed referral form, one of the Home-Start Organisers will contact you to make an appointment to visit you at your home. During that visit they will talk to you about how a Home-Start volunteer could best support you and your family. A short form is completed by the Organiser during this visit giving you the opportunity to identify your areas of need more clearly.
Home-Start volunteers are from different backgrounds and vary in age, but all have parenting experience. They will visit you in your home for a few hours a week. They are carefully selected for their friendliness, non judgemental attitude, practical approach and understanding, and will have been approved and have all attended acourse of preparation before being matched to a suitable family. The length of time a volunteer stays with a family varies according to need. Visiting will stop after discussions between the family, Organiser and volunteer.
The support that the volunteer provides to families is reviewed regularly by the organisers.
